Suggested Packing List for Winter

Winter clothing can be bulky, so it is imperative that you think through your winter packing list before trying to stuff your suitcase. The main thing to remember when packing for winter is that layers are key. If you wear multiple layers of thin clothing, you will trap more body heat than if you wore a heavy sweater.
  1. Layer 1: Undergarments

    • Save room in your suitcase by letting your undergarments double as pajamas.

If you plan to spend time outdoors in a chilly climate, proper winter undergarments are the first essential layer of clothing to pack. Classic long johns are a standard undergarment for travelers planning to endure temperatures below freezing. Made of wool or cotton, long johns can be worn under regular clothing and they can also double as pajamas if you are looking to save room in your luggage. Silk underwear is another comfortable undergarment option, as it insulates the body and wicks moisture away from your skin (an underlayer made of silk or a synthetic material is the best choice if you'll be doing anything active outdoors, such as skiing).

    Layer 2: Basic Outfits

    • Turtlenecks are great for winter layering.

Jeans, corduroys or wool pants are cold-weather basics. In addition, pack at least two shirts per outfit you plan on wearing during your trip. One of these shirts should be manufactured from synthetic material if you are venturing out into the snow or freezing weather, in order to keep your temperature regulated and to keep moisture at bay. Bring a mix of short- and long-sleeved shirts, including turtlenecks, so that you'll be prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions. Pack an abundance of wool, cotton or synthetic socks so that your feet will remain warm and dry. A single pair of dark shoes should suffice, though you should pack hiking boots with traction if you are going out onto icy streets or snowy terrain.

    Layer 3: Coats and Accessories

    • A single scarf is plenty for any winter packing list.

If you want to save room in your suitcase, wear your bulkiest winter coat when traveling by plane, train or automobile to your destination. You should also bring a waterproof covering such as a poncho or rain slicker. Scarves, gloves and hats are winter necessities; one of each accessory in a dark or neutral color should blend well with any outfit.
