A Packing List for Skiing

When you're scaling the black diamond ski trail, you want to make sure you have enough warm clothes to keep you comfortable on the slopes, but not have so much that you're sweating and have to make a pit stop back at the lodge. Your packing list for skiing should include clothes that are easy to layer so you can remove extra clothes when you're going to be very active, but cover up again when you stop and take a break.
  1. Sun Protection

    • Despite the fact that skiing is always in cold, wintry settings, the sun can do its most damage when reflecting off of the white snow. Every skier should make sure to bring facial sunscreen with at least 30 SPF as well as a lip balm with sun protection and sunglasses. For an overnight ski trip, bring aloe or sunburn relief lotion, just in case you get a burn anyway.

    Hats, Gloves and Socks

    • Hats, gloves, and socks are essential for any skiing trip. The majority of body heat escapes through the head, so it is very important for a skier to have some type of warm headgear. Hats contain as much heat as possible, but many skiers opt for just the ear headband so they can keep their ears warm while not getting overheated. For the hands, mittens are better for keeping circulation moving and tend to be warmer than gloves, but you may prefer the convenience of gloves. Many opt for a layer of gloves and a larger pair of mittens to use when the weather gets very cold. You should also layer your socks, just in case you get water or snow in your boots. It is best to wear a layer of fleece socks underneath a thicker pair of wool or high-quality fabric to contain as much heat as possible.

    Clothing and Necessities

    • As skiing is all about layering, you should start planning your trip from the bottom layer up. A good pair of long underwear is the ideal thing to have underneath all of your ski clothes. Silk long underwear is often popular because it is lightweight but stays warm. The next layer should be a lightweight but warm pair of athletic pants and a long sleeve shirt or jacket. This may be all your want to be wearing if you typically get overheated on the slopes. On top of this wear ski pants and a jacket with ski boots. The ski jacket should have lots of pockets to be able to put some items such as granola bars, lip balm, a disposable camera, tissue, your insurance card and an emergency phone number.
