Whether you are skiing or snowboarding you will need to wear water-resistant clothing. Outerwear is especially important for a beginner, who will experience a lot of falls. Without water resistant clothing, your clothes will get wet and then freeze. Sporting goods stores will sell proper ski and snowboarding pants and snow jackets. Your jacket should be long, reaching past your waistline, and should not expose your skin. Ski pants are typically tight, made of thick, insulating material. Snowboarding pants are looser, and made of a lighter, water-resistant material. Ski and snowboarding gear can be very expensive, especially if you plan on purchasing it during the high season. If you buy your gear during the summer months, you can expect big savings. Regardless of the price, you will not want to head down the slopes in jeans.
When it comes to packing for a ski trip, undergarments go way beyond just underwear. A lot of cold air and snow can get into loose snowboarding pants. Women should wear leggings while guys can wear thermals or other long underwear. Thick socks are also important. Snow can get inside your boots, so if you do not have thick socks you will want to wear a couple of pairs. You might want to wear multiple layers underneath your jacket as well, depending on the weather. Long sleeved shirts, thermals and sweatshirts will keep you warm.
You might not think that eyewear is important, but the sun can bounce off the white snow and blind you. If you cannot afford ski goggles, sunglasses with UV protection will work. If you are boarding during storm conditions, sunglasses may not be enough. During these conditions a face mask will help, or a bandanna to cover your nose and mouth. Sunscreen protects your face from the sun's harsh rays. Gloves are essential, especially for beginners. Do not use knit gloves, which will get wet and cold. Look for snowboarding gloves at your local sporting goods store.
