How to Make a Travel Purse

Recent research by a British insurance company reports that over five million adults were victims of theft while on vacation over a five year period -- over a million due to pickpockets. While personal vigilance and keeping away from unsafe areas can reduce your risk of robbery, keeping your valuables tucked away in zippered pockets in a travel purse is a useful precaution.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your fabric out with the wrong side of the fabric facing up. This is the side that does not have a pattern or is duller in color. Outline two 8- by 10-inch rectangles, two 8- by 7-inch rectangles and three 6-inch squares. Cut out all the pieces.

    • 2

Take one 6-inch square and make a hem along one edge by folding over 1/2-inch of fabric and stitching it down. Center the piece, seam down, on the wrong side of one of the 8- by 10-inch rectangles. Folding the remaining three edges under, machine stitch the pocket to the rectangle.

    • 3

Place the remaining two squares on top of one another with the right sides facing. Switch your sewing machine to a number four stitch length setting. Stitch a seam along one side of the squares, 3/4-inch from the edge. Repeat with the 8- by 7-inch rectangles, making a seam on an 8-inch edge. Replace the stitch length to its original setting.

    • 4

Iron both seams so they lie open and flat. Line up the 5-inch zipper centered on the seam of the squares, with the zipper pull and teeth facing down against the fabric. Pin the zipper in place by placing straight pins perpendicular to the zipper teeth. Repeat with the stitched rectangles and one of the 7-inch zippers. Machine stitch a straight line down both sides of each zipper, securing it to the seam. Turn the pieces of fabric so they are right side out, and cut out the loose stitches of the seams to expose the zippers.

    • 5

Turn the zipped 6-inch squares so the right sides are facing each other and open the zipper. Sew the squares together around the remaining three sides 1/2-inch from each edge. Turn the pocket right side out and place it centered on the the right side of the 8- by 10-inch rectangle with the first pocket. Line up the zippered pocket so it covers the stitches from the other pocket, and stitch it in place along the three unzipped edges using a hand needle.

    • 6

Place the right sides of the two 8- by 10-inch rectangles together. Machine stitch a 3/4-inch seam along the top 8-inch edge. Sew in a 7-inch zipper as described in Step 4. Turn the two sides of the purse so the right sides are facing and open the top zipper. Take the zippered 8- by 7-inch pocket and place it, right side out, between the two facing pieces. Line the edges up with the sides and bottom of the bag. Machine stitch the sides and bottom of the purse closed. Turn the purse right side out, keeping the large outside pocket against the side without the 5-inch outside pocket. Iron the side and bottom seams of the purse.

For the strap, mark and cut out two long rectangles 4-inches wide by 4-feet long. Place the two pieces together, with the right side of the fabric facing, and stitch them together on each long side 1/2-inch from the edges. Turn the strap right side out and iron the edges so the seams are flat. Place one end of the strap on the front of the bag 1/2-inch from the side seam and 2-inches down. Hand stitch the strap in place by sewing a box shape with an "X" inside. Repeat with the other edge on the back of the purse on the opposite side.
