How to Make a Cork Board Travel Map

Whether you are teaching an elementary school class about mapping and distances or a family planning for -- or remembering -- a family vacation, a wall-mounted map with the routes and destinations marked out is an excellent visualization tool. Use commercially available country or world maps, or have the kids make their own. Mount the map on a cork board and hang it on the wall so the kids can demonstrate where explorers traveled, follow around-the-world travel adventures or plan an upcoming vacation.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a large rectangle of cork board on a flat work surface. Purchase, make or print off a map of the desired regions of the world to fit the cork board.

    • 2

Put craft glue on the surface of the cork board, covering the entire surface with a light coat of the tacky glue.

    • 3

Align the map with the cork board along one short edge and slowly press the map into place. Press out from the center to smooth away any gaps or wrinkles. Be sure corners and edges are firmly glued in place, using additional glue if necessary. Allow the glue to dry completely, 30 to 60 minutes.

    • 4

Measure the long and short edges of the cork board. Measure narrow strips of colored card stock to the same distances, making two short strips and two long strips. Glue these to the outside edges of the map-covered cork board to create a colorful border and allow them to dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

    • 5

Cut lengths of yarn or flat ribbon to span the distances between travel points. Attach these to the board using the push pins. Use different-colored yarn or ribbon to represent different trips, routes or explorers.

    • 6

Write the map title -- "Our Family Vacation" or "Famous European Explorers," for example, with the markers across the center of the top border strip to identify the content of the map.
