How to Make a Map for a Trip

Road trips can be great fun if you are able to set your own pace, linger when you want to and add or skip destinations on your journey. Without knowledge of the area you are driving to or through, you are at risk of getting lost, getting stuck in traffic or caught in construction zones. This can easily turn a joyful, relaxing trip into a stressful, frustrating event. Being prepared with a detailed map of your route will greatly increase your enjoyment of the trip.

Plan out your trip in advance by choosing your destination and when you would like to go. Decide if there are any additional stops you would like to make along the way and if there is a particular area that you would like to travel through (such as through the mountains or by the ocean).

Use AAA's custom map services. AAA will create a map for your trip as well as suggest sights, scenic routes and help you avoid construction zones (see Resources below).

Create a map on your computer by using Mapquest.com. Go to the website and click on "Driving Directions" (see Resources below). Input your starting address and your destination. You can print both written directions and a map of your route. If you have more than one destination, make sure to change the starting location and end point before printing your additional map. Your maps will also include the miles to your destination and an approximate travel time frame.

Remember to create a map with reverse directions so you can easily return back home. This can be done either through AAA or by clicking on "Reverse Directions" when you create your map with Mapquest.
