How to Map Out a Travel Route

Whether you are consulting a road map or choosing a route using an online map, there are several factors you should take into consideration when choosing a travel route.

Instructions

  1. Plan a Route With a Traditional Map

    • 1

Choose a map or atlas with which to plan your trip. You can purchase maps from bookstores, gas stations, or directly from map-making companies, such as Rand McNally (see Resources below).

    • 2

Decide where you plan to stop, whether you will be stopping for gas, food or rest. Map out these stops on your atlas and select routes between them.

    • 3

Budget time for your stops when calculating how long your trip will take. Other factors can also slow you down, so leave a margin if you must arrive at your destination by a certain time. Many atlases include a list of times between common destinations, which can help you calculate the length of your trip.

Use Online Services to Plan a Travel Route

    • 4

Use online map services that are well known, such as Google Maps or Mapquest (see Resources below). These services update their maps regularly and allow for more precise trip planning.

    • 5

Enter your starting point and destination in the trip planning site. Some will require you to enter each leg of your trip separately, but Google Maps and Mapquest will allow you to "drag" (click on your route with your mouse and move it) your route so that you can include planned stops that aren't on the shortest route.

    • 6

Avoid road construction by checking whether roads on your intended route are closed or slowed. You will need to check the website of the department of transportation for the state in which you will be driving. These websites have regularly updated reports on road work. Map out a route that will allow you to avoid as much traffic as possible.

    • 7

Print out a copy of your travel plans. You should also carry a traditional map during your trip, because many online planners only include directions for getting to your destination and do not necessarily include detours and other important information.
