Packing List for Travel in Northeast for Fall

From the rocky Atlantic coastline to the metropolitan areas of New York, Boston and Philadelphia, the Northeast United States offers vacationers plenty to see and do. This region is comprised of the New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts,Connecticut and Rhode Island) along with New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Summer beach season brings many tourists flocking to the area, but visitors who come in the fall can experience the region's comfortable weather and vistas of fall foliage with off-season prices and smaller crowds.
  1. Apparel

    • Fall weather in the Northeast tends to be moderate and cool but varies depending on when and where you travel. The average October 2009 temperature across the region was 47.3 degrees, according to the Northeast Regional Climate Center. The New England states tend to be cooler than their Mid-Atlantic neighbors.

Pack long pants, short- and long-sleeved shirts for layering, a warm sweater, a windbreaker, warm socks and comfortable walking shoes. Take clothes for the activities you plan to do. If you are interested in a fine seafood dinner or gallery hopping in New York City, pack nice outfits. If you are camping, take extra jeans and a fleece jacket. If you'll be biking or canoeing, pack sunglasses and a hat.

    Weather Gear

    • Day to day climate in the Northeast can vary wildly: You'll need gear for inclement weather. Pack an umbrella, raincoat and rain boots. Take a heavy jacket, hat and gloves for chillier nights, especially if you are traveling in late October to November.

    Outdoor Activity Equipment

    • Pack any accessories you'll need for the Northeast's variety of outdoor pursuits. Sturdy boots and thick socks are a must for hiking, and take binoculars for spotting wildlife. Many travelers take bicycles or canoes, but you can typically rent them if you do not take your own. For camping, take a tent, sleeping bags (cold-weather equipped), a flashlight and cooking gear. Take sunscreen and bug spray, especially if you're traveling at the beginning of the fall. If you're going to hit Vermont or New Hampshire's slopes when ski season opens in late November, pack your ski gear.

    Miscellaneous

    • If you'll be taking advantage of the shopping opportunities in the Northeast's cities and outlet meccas, take an extra bag or suitcase for purchases.

Driving tours of the area are popular, and they offer views of the region's fall foliage. You can find foliage routes online before you travel and print maps to take, as well as your GPS.
