How to Travel With Food Stamps

When you use food stamps, you get a card that you swipe like a credit card and your account is debited for your food purchases. If you want to go on a trip out of state, you can use your benefits in most places. Because they're provided on a national level -- even if the dispersal happens on the state level -- they transfer from one place to another. Make sure you have your identification and card with you if you're planning to use benefits away from home. Many states refer to the program as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and call their benefits SNAP benefits, but they work the same way, no matter the name.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your travel plans. If you're planning on traveling anywhere other than the 50 states, you won't be able to use your benefits. As long as you're in one of the 50 states, you can use them anywhere they're accepted.

    • 2

Check your balance before you leave. Most states have websites that let you check your balance, but for some places you have to call. Refer to the Electronic Benefits Transfer, or EBT, customer service numbers in Resources to get the information for your state.

    • 3

Make sure you know your personal identification number for your card. The card works like a debit card and if you don't know your PIN, you can't access your funds.

    • 4

Plan to get food at grocery stores and other shops that accept food stamp benefits. Restaurants aren't able to accept food stamps.

    • 5

Bring your card with you when you leave. Use it as you normally do at any grocery store that accepts food stamps.
