There is no historical record of the Roman Emperor Claudius (reigned 41–54 AD) sending ambassadors to or receiving news from Norway. During the 1st century AD, Norway was inhabited by Germanic tribes (proto-Norse) far beyond the Roman Empire's northern frontier (the Limes). The Romans had no diplomatic relations, trade, or direct political contact with Scandinavia at this time. Knowledge of the far north came only through vague second-hand accounts from traders or Germanic intermediaries.
