The Florida Gator Walk: How Steve Spurrier Started a Tradition in 1990
Before every home game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium ("The Swamp"), the Florida Gators football team walks from the team hotel (or locker room facility) through a gauntlet of 20,000+ screaming fans. It's one of college football's most electric traditions. It started with one man: Steve Spurrier.
The Origin: 1990, Spurrier's First Season
- Context: Spurrier hired Dec 1989. Inherited 7–5 team. Brought "Fun 'n' Gun" offense, swagger, and a belief in fan connection.
- The Idea: Spurrier saw other teams (e.g., Auburn's "Tiger Walk") and wanted something for Florida. He proposed the team walk from the old dorm (North Hall) to the stadium.
- First Walk: September 1, 1990 vs. Oklahoma State. Team walked ~0.3 miles. Fans lined the route. Gators won 50–7. Tradition born.
- Evolution: Route changed (Hotel → Stadium), "Gator Growl" pep rally added, "Mr. Two Bits" (George Edmondson) led cheers, band, cheerleaders, Dazzlers join. Now: ~45 min before kickoff, thousands deep.
Why It Worked
- Accessibility: Players close enough to touch (high-fives, autographs).
- Intimidation: Visiting teams walk same gauntlet (earlier, quieter).
- Identity: Embodied Spurrier's "We're gonna beat people" confidence.
- Recruiting: "You want to walk that walk?" Powerful pitch.
Spurrier's Legacy
He coached 12 seasons (1990–2001): 122–27–1, 6 SEC titles, 1996 National Championship, Heisman (Wuerffel). The Walk outlasted him. Muschamp, McElwain, Mullen, Napier — all kept it. It's now institutional, not personal.
Experience It
- When: ~2 hrs before kickoff (check schedule).
- Where: Gale Lemerand Dr (between Hotel/Indoor Practice Facility and Stadium).
- Tip: Arrive early. Wear orange/blue. Bring kids. Be loud.
Steve Spurrier didn't just win games. He gave Gator Nation a ritual. Every home Saturday, the Walk says: We are here. We are together. We are Florida.
