The destination of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was the Pacific Ocean. The expedition was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1804 to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and to find a route to the Pacific Ocean. The expedition, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, set out from St. Louis, Missouri, in May 1804, and traveled up the Missouri River and across the Rocky Mountains. They reached the Pacific Ocean in November 1805, and returned to St. Louis in September 1806.
