The battle provided impetus for the Texan victory over Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto just a month and a half later, leading to the founding of the Republic of Texas, today's state of Texas.
In 1891, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a group of women claiming lineage to Texas pioneers, was designated official custodian of the Alamo. They continue to manage the site to this day.
British singer/songwriter Phil Collins has a self-declared obsession with the Alamo. Collins owns possibly the largest collection of Alamo artifacts in existence.
The famous facade of Alamo chapel, with its characteristic hump, serves as a an iconic representation of the Alamo, but it was not the same shape at the time of the battle. The two upper windows and the famous humped shape were added during later renovations.
The Alamo is one of Texas' main tourist attractions. Three buildings--The Shrine, Long Barrack Museum and the Gift Museum--are open to visitors. Admission to the Alamo is free.
