On May 1, 1979, 18-year-old Deborah Gail Carter of Gastonia, North Carolina was killed when she fell from the Shockwave roller coaster. Following her death, lap bar restraints were installed on roller coasters at Carowinds and all other Paramount parks.
On July 12, 1991, 52-year-old James Becton of Kings Mountain, North Carolina died after suffering a heart attach on Thunder Road, a go-kart attraction.
