Established in 1791 by Spanish colonists as part of their efforts to Catholicize and subjugate the local Ohlone people, the Santa Cruz Mission was used as a military base by Spanish soldiers. The soldiers were stationed at the mission to protect the missionaries from attacks by the Indigenous peoples and to enforce the Spanish colonial rule over the region.
