What did the San Jose mission look like on past?

1797

- Adobe walls were 2-3 feet thick.

- Roof was thatch.

- No tower or belfry.

- No corredores (covered porches).

- No kitchen or storage rooms separate from the quadrangle.

- Two rooms to east of the church: One was the priests' quarters, the other was Father Duran's library.

- Tower and belfry added to church.

- Sacristy added to the church.

- Priests' quarters remodeled and enlarged.

- Major earthquake damaged the mission church and other buildings.

1823-24

- Mission church and other buildings repaired.

- New roof put on the church (the old thatch roof was replaced with tiles.)

- Facade of church was stuccoed.

- New furnishings placed in the church, including an altar, pulpit, and baptismal font.

- Secularization of the missions (the missions were turned over to the Mexican government).

- Mission buildings began to deteriorate.
