Construction of the Øresund Bridge (linking Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden) began in 1995 and was completed in 2000—a five-year build.
The 16-km (10-mi) combined rail/road link includes an 8-km bridge, a 4-km artificial island (Peberholm), and a 4-km immersed tunnel. It opened to traffic on 1 July 2000.
