How long has tourism been around?

Tourism, as we know it today, has its origins in the 19th century. However, the concept of traveling for leisure and pleasure can be traced back much further. In ancient times, people traveled for religious purposes, such as pilgrimages to holy sites. The wealthy and privileged also undertook Grand Tours of Europe, which were educational journeys intended to broaden their horizons and introduce them to different cultures. During the Middle Ages, travel was limited to a small elite, but by the Renaissance, it had become more common for people of all social classes to travel. The development of faster and more comfortable modes of transportation, such as steamboats and railways, made travel more accessible and affordable. By the late 19th century, tourism had become a global industry.
