Consider Pawley's Island which is somewhat subdued and filled with history. Pawley's Island was one of the first beach resorts established in the country and enjoys a loyal following. The area was first settled by the Winyah and Waccamaw Indians and eventually landed in the hands of Percival Pawley's sons. Now, visitors enjoy four miles of beach, shops, golf and wonderful dining. Also, the world famous Brookgreen Gardens is located in Pawley's Island and is a popular tourist attraction.
Consider Litchfield Beach, located in Georgetown County. Another area filled with historical interest, Litchfield Beach has its roots in rice planters who settled the area in the late 1700's. Litchfield Plantation was one of the rice plantations and lends the area its name. This area has been a resort town since the 1960's and boasts golf, shops, dining and miles of beach. Although you can stay in the one hotel in the area, most prefer to rent condominiums or houses.
Consider Murrells Inlet, known for its seafood that supplies many restaurants in the area with fresh fish. In addition to Native Americans and rice planters, World War II soldiers and pirates have called this land home. If you are interested in deep sea fishing, Murrells Inlet may be the perfect spot for you. You can enjoy renting boats or jet skis, kayaking, scuba diving and boat tours.
Consider Garden City Beach, located in Georgetown and Horry counties. Here you will find both the sea and an inlet. So, if you enjoy crabbing, fishing, and water sports, you are in luck. Children as well as adults are enjoying the newly built Creekwalk that allows visitors to walk over the salt marsh in the area. In Garden City, music is played on one of the peers during the summer evenings and dining is outstanding.
Consider Surfside Beach, known for its family friendly atmosphere. In addition to attracting tourists, this area has a substantial residential base. The residential base allows for such fun activities as annual festivals and events as well as a fishing pier, restaurants, and many beach house and condo rentals.
Consider Little River, located just to the south of the North Carolina border. Situated on the Intracoastal Waterway, it's a tide creek that drew in pirates in years gone by. In addition, blockade-runners used this area during the Civil War. Little Creek has arts and crafts exhibits, educational exhibits, the Blue Crab Festival, and food booths filled with all manner of crab.
