How to Take Your RV on a Train Vacation

RV drivers used to be able to load their big rigs onto train flatcars and stay in them during tours of Mexico's Copper Canyon. You can no longer load your RV onto the train to tour the valley -- touted to be at least four times larger than the United States' Grand Canyon -- but you can still take a vacation to the area that lets you combine RV and train transportation.

Instructions

    • 1

Book a Copper Canyon RV trip through Adventure Caravans or Fantasy RV Tours. The tour companies, which offer RV drivers a way to travel with fellow RV enthusiasts in a guided setting, offer trips that last anywhere from 14 to 40 days. You can book a tour by calling the companies' toll-free numbers.

Pack your belongings in your RV for the hot and dry climate of the desert, making sure to bring along some extra gear for cool nights. Pack extra coolant in case of overheating, and generally prepare your RV for a long drive. Be sure to include extra medications, water and food items you might not be able to get in Mexico. Make sure you have a valid passport.

    • 3

Show up at the rendezvous point for your RV caravan. Typically, rendezvous points are in Texas. Follow your caravan guide to Copper Canyon, making sure to stay with the group. When you arrive in Mexico, your tour operator will have a campground set up where you can leave your rig while you tour the Copper Canyon on the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad.
