Private Tropical Vacations

For vacationers seeking a relaxing getaway, the appeal of a tropical locale is undeniable. Relaxing in the sun and warm weather is often equated with a successful vacation. For some, however, a beach filled with people and organized activity isn't exotic enough. Though rare and often expensive, there are several private islands that accommodate singles, couples or small groups. Waiting lists can be long for these exclusive and luxurious destinations and the selection process difficult.
  1. Necker Island

    • Named after a Dutch military man, Necker Island remained completely uninhabited until the late 20th century. Today, the 74-square-mile island is owned by billionaire Richard Branson. Necker sits just north of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. Opened as a luxury retreat in 1984, it offers 60 staff members and welcomes a maximum of 28 guests at a time. The island is surrounded by tropical waters and coral reefs and has white sand beaches. Rooms can be booked on an individual basis during 'Celebration Weeks,' which change each year. Each room is complete with spa-style bathrooms, designer furniture, luxury linens and a LCD television with satellite stations. Island hikes, sailing, windsurfing, waterskiing and snorkeling, as well as several other land and water-based activities, are offered.

Each villa includes individually designed furniture, luxury linens and pillow-top mattresses. There are just 14 villas on the island, each separated by dense forests and with private beach frontage. Guests can surf, swim, boat, hike, bike and ride horses. Scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, tennis and spa services can all be arranged.
