Purpose of the Center Turning Lane

In Texas, the center turning lane (often called a "two-way left-turn lane") is reserved exclusively for vehicles making left turns or U-turns. It is not a travel lane or a passing lane.

Key Regulations

1. Proper Entry: Enter only when preparing to turn left or make a U-turn. Do not use it for through travel or to bypass traffic.
2. Right-of-Way: Yield to oncoming traffic in both directions before turning.
3. No Passing: Other vehicles may not pass a vehicle lawfully stopped or moving slowly in the center lane.
4. No Stopping: Stopping is prohibited except when waiting to turn. Picking up or dropping off passengers is not allowed.
5. Double Turn Lanes: Where double turn lanes exist, use the lane appropriate for your intended turn direction.
6. School Buses: Vehicles behind a school bus displaying a "SCHOOL BUS" or "SCHOOL ZONE" sign must stop, including those in the center turning lane.
