Driving from New York to Uruguay: Impossible — No Land Connection
You cannot drive from New York to Uruguay. There is no continuous land route connecting North America to South America.
The Gap: The Darién Gap
- Location: Border between Panama (Central America) and Colombia (South America).
- Length: ~100 km (60 mi) of impassable rainforest, swamps, mountains.
- No roads: The Pan-American Highway ends at Yaviza, Panama and resumes at Turbo, Colombia. No bridge, ferry, or tunnel crosses it.
- Reasons: Extreme terrain, environmental protection (Darién National Park, UNESCO), indigenous autonomy (Emberá, Wounaan), security (drug trafficking, guerrillas), cost.
