Telegrams No Longer Exist

International telegram service between the UK and Australia (and globally) has been discontinued.

Timeline

• UK domestic telegrams: Ended 30 September 1982 (British Telecom).
• International telegrams: Phased out 1980s–1990s as telex, fax, email, and internet rendered them obsolete.
• Australia Post: Ceased telegram service 2011.
• Last major operators: Western Union ended global telegrams 2006.

Modern Equivalents

• Email / Instant Messaging / VoIP (WhatsApp, Signal, Zoom, Teams) — instant, free/cheap, multimedia.
• International Registered Mail / Courier (DHL, FedEx, UPS) — physical documents, 2–5 days.
• Diplomatic / Military channels — for government use only.
