Places to Retire Internationally

There are a few things to take into consideration when deciding to retire internationally. According to MSN Money, about 1 million American retirees are living abroad. When choosing a place to retire, people should consider the climate, safety, property costs, cost of living and culture to find the perfect place.
  1. Mexico

For those who want to live close to U.S. borders, Rocky Point and San Felipe are two places that have retirement communities. Other Mexico destinations that have relatively large American populations are Cuernavaca, San Miguel de Allende, Oaxaca, Morelia and Guanajuato.

    Central and South America

    • Two South American destinations made Smart Money's list of best places to retire in 2006: Uruguay and Panama City, Panama. These two places have low cost of living and inexpensive real estate. MSNBC identified Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua and Honduras as additional countries where Americans may want to retire because of discounted health care and tax-free incentives.
