In contrast, during the winter solstice (June 21-22), the sun does not rise at all in Antarctica. This is because the Earth's axis is tilted away from the sun during this time, and Antarctica is located at the southernmost point on the globe. As a result, the sun stays below the horizon for the entire day.
The length of the day in Antarctica varies between these two extremes, depending on the time of year. On the equinoxes (March 20-21 and September 22-23), the day and night are approximately equal in length, each lasting about 12 hours.
