Packing for -40°C / -40°F & Katabatic Winds

Antarctica demands redundancy, layering, and absolute reliability. This is a condensed field kit; expeditions carry far more.

🧥 Clothing (Layer System)

• Base: Merino/synthetic long-sleeve top & bottom ×2 (no cotton).
• Mid: Fleece jacket + pants OR grid-fleece + lightweight down vest.
• Insulation: Expedition down parka (800+ fill, 300g+), down pants/salopettes.
• Shell: Goretex Pro / eVent hardshell jacket & bib pants – waterproof, windproof, breathable.
• Extremities: Liner gloves + insulated mitts + overmitts; liner socks + heavy wool socks + vapor barrier socks; insulated boots (Baffin, Steger, Koflach) rated -50°C; balaclava, neck gaiter, face mask, ski goggles (cat 4), glacier glasses.

⛺ Shelter & Sleep

• 4-season expedition tent (Hilleberg, MSR, Bibler) + repair kit.
• -40°C rated down sleeping bag (Western Mountaineering, Feathered Friends, PHD) + vapor barrier liner.
• Two sleeping pads: closed-cell foam (R-value 2+) + inflatable (R-value 5+).
• Snow saw (G3, Black Diamond) + avalanche shovel (for snow walls, digging).
• Emergency bivvy (SOL, Blizzard).

🍲 Food, Water & Cooking

• Freeze-dried meals (Mountain House, Backpacker's Pantry) × 2/day + 2 emergency.
• High-fat snacks: nuts, chocolate, cheese, salami, pemmican, energy bars (Kate's Real Food, Clif).
• MSR WhisperLite Universal / XGK-EX stove (white gas) + 2L fuel/person/day + windscreen.
• 2× 1L insulated bottles (Nalgene + Parka) + thermos.
• Water: Melt snow (fuel-intensive). SteriPEN / Katadyn BeFree / tablets backup.

🧭 Navigation & Comm

• Iridium Extreme / Garmin inReach Mini 2 (satellite messaging/SOS).
• GPS (Garmin GPSMAP 67i) + paper maps (USGS/BAS) + compass (Suunto MC-2G).
• PLB (ACR ResQLink) – redundant SOS.
• VHF/UHF radio (team comms).

🩹 Medical & Repair

• Expedition FAK: trauma (CAT tourniquet, hemostatic gauze), frostbite (ibuprofen, aloe, dressings), altitude (dexamethasone, nifedipine), GI, dental, antibiotics (cipro, azithro).
• Personal meds × 2 supply.
• Multi-tool (Leatherman Wave+), knife (Mora), duct tape, Tenacious Tape, zip ties, wire, JB Weld, spare stove parts, tent pole splints.

☀️ Extras

• Sunglasses (Julbo, Oakley) + ski goggles.
• Headlamp (Petzl Nao+) + 4× spare batteries (lithium, kept warm).
• Sunscreen SPF 50+ (zinc), lip balm SPF 30+.
• Hand/foot warmers (HotHands) × 20.
• Pee bottle (wide-mouth Nalgene) + funnel – essential.
• Journal, pen (pencil freezes), camera (batteries inside jacket).

Rule: If it fails at -40°C, it's not in the kit. Test everything beforehand.
