The southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) is one of the few mammals that migrate to Antarctica for the austral summer (December–February).

Why They Come

• Feed on abundant krill in nutrient-rich Southern Ocean.
• Baleen plates filter krill from water.
• Social animals; often seen in pods up to 100.
• Known for curiosity; may approach boats.

Other summer visitors include humpback whales, minke whales, and various seals, but the southern right whale is a classic example of a mammal migrating to Antarctica for seasonal feeding.
