Why did Columbus want to sail across the Atlantic?

Columbus believed that by sailing west across the Atlantic, he could reach Asia. He was aware of the general size and shape of the Earth and knew that by travelling far enough westward, he would eventually reach the Orient, which was home to many desirable goods such as spices, silks, and jewels. Columbus was driven by the same desire for fame, wealth, and adventure as many other explorers of his time.
