How to Fill Out a Drivers Log

Truck drivers that haul loads of cargo from place to place seem to be on the road constantly. However, this isn't the case, and they should have the logs to prove it. If you are new to the hauling industry, this is not a difficult spreadsheet to keep track of and it must be done on a constant basis to avoid fines. You need to maintain the last eight days of daily logs and show that you drove no more than 11 hours a day and have a maximum of 14 on duty hours in the same time frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Download a drivers log template or spreadsheet to use as your daily log, or use the one provided by your employer. A simple Internet search will give you several places from which to download a copy of a daily drivers log, or you can use the one located in the Resources section.

    • 2

Fill out the line for your home terminal. This is the location that the truck originated from and goes back to each day.

    • 3

Write in the date and other incidentals, such as the name of the company, codriver and office location.

    • 4

Write in the name of the starting location and destination.

    • 5

Draw a line from one hour to the next as you go through the day. If you are off duty, such as eating, draw the line on the "off duty" row of the spreadsheet. If you are driving, the line goes on the "on duty" row. When changing between functions, draw the line down or up to the appropriate row during the time that you switched what you were doing. Each block is one hour with segments for every 15 minutes to help you better estimate time. Other rows include "sleeping" and "on duty not driving."

    • 6

Total the hours for each row and place it at the end of the row.

    • 7

Total all the hours together and put it at the bottom of the total row hours. It should equal 24.

    • 8

Write in the total miles driven in the 24-hour period and total hours driven by you. If you were the only one driving, then the numbers will be the same.
