Do people live in Antarctica permanently?

While no permanent residents live in Antarctica, several research stations are staffed year-round by rotating personnel, primarily scientists and support staff from various countries. According to the Antarctic Treaty, signatory countries may maintain stations and conduct scientific research in Antarctica, but no country may claim territorial sovereignty or use Antarctica for military purposes.
