It occasionally snows in southern England, but snowfall is generally light and does not accumulate. The average annual snowfall in London, for example, is just 2.5 centimetres. However, heavy snowfalls can occur in southern England, particularly during cold spells in January and February. In 1987, for example, southern England was hit by a severe blizzard that dumped up to 50 centimetres of snow.
