Mount Everest Summits: 1966 vs. 2011

1966: An American team led by Norman G. Dyhrenfurth made the first summit via the West Ridge.

2011: 597 climbers reached the summit from the south side (a record at the time), plus 16 from the north side.

These numbers illustrate the dramatic increase in Everest ascents over four decades.
