Is there summer in the Antarctic?
Yes, there is summer in the Antarctic. The Antarctic is the southernmost continent on Earth and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. It is coldest, darkest continent in the world with average temperatures below freezing. However, during the austral summer (December to February), temperatures in some coastal areas of the Antarctic can rise above freezing and daylight lasts for 24 hours.
While the South Pole remains dark during the winter, the Antarctic summer brings extended periods of sunlight known as the midnight sun. This occurs because of the Earth's tilt on its axis, which causes the Southern Hemisphere to be tilted towards the sun during the summer months.
