First Recorded Solar Eclipses in Nigeria: Historical Dates

Solar eclipses are a regular celestial spectacle in Nigeria. Historical records document several total solar eclipses visible in the region during the 20th century. The earliest of these recorded events occurred on 29 May 1919, followed by another on 19 June 1936, and a third on 15 February 1961.

These dates mark the first scientifically documented total eclipses observed in what is now Nigeria. Each event provided valuable opportunities for astronomers and the public alike to witness the dramatic alignment of the Sun, Moon, and Earth. While earlier eclipses undoubtedly occurred, these three are the first with reliable historical records.
