Is South Sudan the World's Newest Country?

Yes. South Sudan is the world's youngest internationally recognized sovereign state. It gained independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011, following a historic referendum in January 2011 where 98.83% of voters chose secession.

Path to Independence

South Sudan's independence came after decades of conflict, including two civil wars (1955–1972 and 1983–2005) between the predominantly Christian and animist south and the Muslim-dominated north. The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement paved the way for the referendum and eventual sovereignty.

Since independence, South Sudan has faced significant challenges, including internal conflict, humanitarian crises, and economic instability. Despite these struggles, it remains a UN member state and part of the African Union.
