Sudan’s Four Major Deserts

Desert Regions of Sudan

1. Nubian Desert (North): Sand dunes, rocky plateaus, wadis; extends into Egypt/Eritrea.
2. Bayuda Desert (Central‑East): Rugged buttes, mesas, volcanic formations.
3. Ingessana Hills / Ingessana Sand Sea (East): Sand dunes, sandstone outcrops, seasonal lakes; borders Chad.
4. Selima Sand Sheet (Southwest): Vast dune fields, sparse vegetation; extends into Chad.

These arid zones cover much of northern and eastern Sudan, shaping nomadic livelihoods and limiting agriculture.
