Rhodesia: The Country That Became Zimbabwe

Rhodesia no longer exists on any official map. The territory known as Southern Rhodesia (1923–1965), then the unrecognized Republic of Rhodesia (1965–1979), then Zimbabwe Rhodesia (1979), has been the Republic of Zimbabwe since April 18, 1980.

The Name "Rhodesia"

• Named for Cecil John Rhodes (1853–1902), British imperialist, diamond magnate, Cape PM.
• British South Africa Company (BSAC) administered 1890–1923 under royal charter.
• "Rhodesia" applied to both Northern (Zambia) and Southern (Zimbabwe) territories until 1964.

Timeline of Transition

1. 1923: Southern Rhodesia becomes self-governing British colony (white minority rule).
2. 1953–63: Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland (with Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland) — dissolved.
3. 1965 (Nov 11): Ian Smith's Rhodesian Front issues Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from UK — white minority government, not recognized internationally.
4. 1965–79: Bush War / Chimurenga — ZANU (Mugabe) & ZAPU (Nkomo) guerrilla war vs. Rhodesian Security Forces.
5. 1979 (Lancaster House Agreement): UK-brokered ceasefire, constitution, elections.
6. 1979 (Jun–Dec): Zimbabwe Rhodesia (Muzorewa) — brief, unrecognized.
7. 1980 (Apr 18): Independence as Zimbabwe. Robert Mugabe (ZANU-PF) wins election. Canaan Banana first President.

Why the Name Change?

• Decolonization: "Rhodesia" = imperial imposition (Rhodes = conquest, exploitation).
• African identity: "Zimbabwe" = dzimba dza mabwe (Shona: "houses of stone") — Great Zimbabwe ruins, pre-colonial civilization.
• Political break: UDI regime's symbol repudiated by majority rule.

Legacy & Sensitivity

• Some white Zimbabweans/expats still use "Rhodesia" nostalgically — contested.
• "Rhodesian" as adjective (e.g., Rhodesian Ridgeback dog) persists in specific contexts.
• Official usage: Zimbabwe only. UN, AU, all governments.
