Major Infrastructure Projects in Libya: Desalination, Water, Solar & Wind

Libya has undertaken several landmark engineering projects:

• Qaddafi Desalination Plant (Sirte) – World’s largest seawater reverse‑osmosis facility (1 million m³/day capacity).
• Great Man‑Made River (GMMR) – Vast underground pipeline network transporting fossil groundwater from the Sahara to coastal cities; the world’s largest irrigation project.
• Ubari Solar Power Station – Libya’s first utility‑scale solar plant (120 MW photovoltaic).
• Gharyan Wind Farm – Libya’s first wind farm (100 MW).
