Gambia, officially known as the Republic of the Gambia, is a unitary democratic presidential republic. The president of the Gambia serves as both the head of state and the head of government. The country has a multi-party system with the president and members of the National Assembly elected by universal suffrage. The president is directly elected by the people for a five-year term and is eligible for re-election only once. The National Assembly is composed of 53 elected members, who serve for a five-year term.
