Kosovo: Status, Location, and International Recognition

Kosovo is a partially recognized state in the Balkans. Declared independence 2008; recognized by 98 UN members. Serbia, Russia, China, and five EU states do not recognize it.

Location

Borders: Serbia (north/east), Albania (west/south), Montenegro (northwest). Area: ~10,908 km². Capital: Pristina.

Status

Member of IMF, World Bank, EBRD; Council of Europe member; UN observer. EU candidate pending normalization with Serbia.
