How did Ghana become such a powerful state?

The Kingdom of Ghana, also known as Wagadou, did not become a particularly powerful state. While it was an influential kingdom in the West African region during the medieval period, its power and reach were relatively limited compared to other notable African kingdoms and empires of the time.
