Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has served as Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana since January 7, 2021. He is the first Speaker from the opposition party in Ghana's Fourth Republic—a historic milestone for the country's democracy.
The 8th Parliament (2021–2025) is evenly split: 137 NPP, 137 NDC, 1 independent (who caucuses with NPP). Bagbin's election—supported by NDC and the independent MP—created a hung parliament dynamic, forcing cross-party negotiation on legislation and committee leadership. He has emphasized consensus-building and institutional strengthening.
Presides over sittings, interprets Standing Orders, represents Parliament externally, chairs Parliamentary Service Board (administration). Not a voting member except to break ties (casting vote).
