Why was the coastal city of Sofala important to growth and strength Great Zimbabwe?

The coastal city of Sofala was not of any significance to the growth or strength of Great Zimbabwe. Great Zimbabwe's growth and strength was primarily due to its control over the trade of gold, ivory, and other valuable commodities from the interior of southern Africa.
