How to Travel to Cuba With Children

Traveling to Cuba with your child on vacation seems like a fun trip; the kids get to swim and play on the beach and you get to order fruity cocktails from your hotel's pool bar. However, anytime you travel out of the country, especially with children, precautions must be taken and documentation must be obtained. No matter your child's age, he or she needs a passport to visit Cuba -- unless you are arriving and departing by sea in which case a passport card is sufficient. Children must also be up to date on vaccinations.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the United State's medical advice for traveling to Cuba (see Resources). All persons traveling should have all required vaccinations and emergency contact numbers of your physicians and pediatricians. Children younger than 2 need one dose of measles vaccine at least 28 days prior to departure. Children 2 and older need two doses.

    • 2

Forbid your child from playing with any animals they come across while in Cuba to prevent being scratched or bitten by a sick animal.

    • 3

Pack all antibiotics and medications your child needs, along with a note from your child's pediatrician declaring that all medications and medical supplies being carried into Cuba are necessary for your child's health. Not providing a note could result in your child's medications being confiscated.

    • 4

Drink only bottled water. Tap water in Cuba is not safe to drink and could cause you and/or your child to become sick.

    • 5

Obtain a passport from the U.S. Department of State for your child, not matter his or her age, if you are flying into and out of Cuba. If you are cruising into Cuba by boat you can opt for a passport card from the U.S. Department of State for your child.

    • 6

Pack accordingly. Pack snacks, entertainment and the appropriate clothing for your child on your flight or cruise and for your stay in Cuba.
