How did Malawi get its official name?
Malawi is named after the Maravi people, an ethnic group that migrated to the area from Zambia in the 16th century. The name "Maravi" is thought to be derived from the Maravi people's habit of tattooing their faces. The country was officially named Malawi upon independence in 1964.
