Goods on the Move: What Travels Zambia's Great North Road

The Great North Road (T2) is Zambia’s arterial highway—stretching ~1,000 km from Lusaka (capital) northeast to Mpulungu on Lake Tanganyika (DRC border). It’s the lifeline for domestic distribution and international trade (Tanzania, DRC, Burundi, Rwanda). Here’s what rolls on it.

1. Agricultural Products (The Volume Leader)

  • Maize: Zambia’s staple; surplus moves from Central/Eastern Province to Lusaka mills and export corridors.
  • Tobacco: Cash crop from Eastern/Western; to auction floors (Lilongwe, Malawi) and export.
  • Cotton: Eastern Province → ginneries → textile mills or export.
  • Coffee: Northern (Kasama, Mbala) → Nakonde border → Tanzania/Dar es Salaam → world.
  • Soya, Sunflower, Groundnuts: Growing oilseed sector.

2. Livestock (On the Hoof & Refrigerated)

  • Cattle: Western/Southern Province → Lusaka abattoirs, DRC (Kasumbalesa), Tanzania.
  • Goats/Sheep: Local markets, urban demand, export (Middle East via Tanzania).
  • Pigs/Poultry: Commercial units near Lusaka supply city; some transit north.

3. Minerals (High Value, Heavy Haul)

  • Copper/Cobalt Concentrates: Copperbelt (Kitwe, Chingola, Mufulira) → Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) or Durban (SA) for smelting/export. Massive truck volumes (side-tippers, 30-40t).
  • Zinc/Lead: Kabwe → export.
  • Emeralds: Kafubu (Kitwe) → Lusaka/Ndola → airport (high-value, low-volume).

4. Manufactured & Consumer Goods (Northbound)

  • FMCG: Cooking oil, sugar, flour, beer, soap — Lusaka/industrial zones → Northern/Western Province depots.
  • Construction Materials: Cement (Chilanga, Ndola), steel, roofing sheets, paint.
  • Fuel: Petrol, diesel, kerosene — Ndola terminal (TAZAMA pipeline from Dar) → tankers north to Lubumbashi (DRC), Kasama, Mpulungu.
  • Vehicles/Machinery: Imports (Japan, UAE, SA) via Dar → Zambian dealers, mines.

5. Cross-Border Trade (The NACALA Corridor)

Great North Road feeds the Nacala Corridor (rail + road to Mozambique) and Tazara Railway (Dar–Kapiri Mposhi). It’s SADC’s north-south spine.

Challenges on the Road

  • Pavement deterioration (heavy axle loads).
  • Single carriageway — overtaking risks.
  • Border delays (Nakonde/Tunduma, Kasumbalesa).
  • Seasonal floods (Luangwa, Chambeshi rivers).

Upgrades (dual carriageway sections, weighbridges, one-stop border posts) are underway — but the Great North Road remains a test of patience, suspension, and logistics for every trucker and trader on it.
