Vegetation Zones of Lesotho: From Alpine Grasslands to Valley Forests
Lesotho—the "Kingdom in the Sky"—is entirely above 1,400 m. Its vegetation mirrors altitude, latitude, and human pressure. Six main zones:
1. Alpine Grasslands (>3,000 m)
- Climate: Cold, dry, high UV, frost year-round.
- Dominants: *Festuca caprina*, *Agrostis lachnantha*, *Helichrysum trilineatum* (everlasting), *Alchemilla* spp.
- Growth form: Cushion plants, rosettes, tussocks — wind/hydrophobic adaptations.
2. Montane Grasslands (1,800–2,500 m)
- Dominants: *Themeda triandra* (red grass), *Tristachya leucothrix*, *Buddleja saligna* (false olive).
- Fire-adapted: Seasonal burns maintain grassland; suppress woody encroachment.
- Grazing: Communal rangelands — cattle, sheep, goats, horses.
3. Subalpine Woodlands (2,500–3,000 m)
- Trees: *Widdringtonia nodiflora* (Mulanje cedar, relict), *Leucosidea sericea* (ouhout / silky-leaved beech) — wind-shaped, multi-stemmed.
- Shrubs: *Erica* spp., *Cliffortia*, *Rhamnus*.
- Transition: Grassland ↔ forest ecotone.
4. Temperate Forests (Lowlands & Valleys, <2,000 m)
- Western/Southern valleys: Deeper soils, more moisture.
- Canopy: *Olea europaea* subsp. *cuspidata* (wild olive), *Podocarpus latifolius* (real yellowwood), *Celtis africana* (white stinkwood), *Kiggelaria africana* (wild peach).
- Understory: *Rhus*, *Maytenus*, ferns, *Asparagus* spp.
5. Scrublands & Thickets (Degraded / Dry Slopes)
- Dominants: *Acacia karroo* (sweet thorn), *Rhus lancea* (karee), *Euclea crispa* (blue guarri), *Diospyros lycioides* (bushveld bluebush).
- Drivers: Overgrazing, fuelwood collection, erosion → woody encroachment / desertification.
6. Wetlands (Mires, Sponges, Vleis)
- High-altitude peatlands: *Sphagnum* bogs (rare, carbon sinks).
- Riverine: *Typha capensis* (bulrush), *Phragmites australis* (common reed), *Carex* spp. (sedges).
- Critical: Water regulation for Senqu/Orange River basin.
Pressures
- Overgrazing (communal tenure, no rotation).
- Erosion (donga/gully formation).
- Invasive: *Rosa rubiginosa* (sweet briar), *Acacia mearnsii* (black wattle).
- Climate change: upward shift of zones, drying wetlands.
Lesotho's vegetation is a **high-altitude archive**—fragile, functional, and foundational to southern Africa's water security.
