What is the location of Cairo?

Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة or مصر القاهرة, IPA: [ˈelˈqɑːhɪrɑ, ˈmasˤɾ elˈqɑːhɪrɑ]) is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in Africa. Located on the Nile River in northern Egypt, it is also the largest metropolitan area in the Middle East. The Greater Cairo metropolitan area, with a population of 20.4 million, is the largest Arab city and the 15th-largest city in the world. Cairo is associated with ancient Egypt, as the famous Giza Necropolis and the ancient city of Memphis are located in its geographical area. Cairo itself was founded in 969 CE by the Fatimid dynasty, but the urban area has existed since at least the Roman era, and was the location of the ancient Egyptian capital of Heliopolis.

Cairo is located in the northern part of Egypt, about 165 km (103 miles) south of the Mediterranean Sea coast. It lies on both banks of the Nile River, with the eastern part of the city located in the Nile Delta region and the western part located on the Giza Plateau. The city's area is about 453 km2 (175 sq mi).
