The Mali Empire was founded in the 13th century by Sundiata Keita (also known as Mari Djata). Son of Naré Maghann Konaté (Mandinka ruler of Kaniaga) and Sogolon Konde, he was exiled by his uncle, returned to lead a revolt against the Sosso Empire, defeated King Sumanguru Kante at the Battle of Kirina (1235), and established Mali.
